Affiliate Marketing Basics

Affiliate marketing is really very simple, especially if you have a blog or website.

Want to know where to begin?

Number one, you’ll want to do some research and find popular products that you find interesting.

Then you’ll have to find a network first, then a merchant that has an affiliate program.

Once you find an affiliate program you'll need to start promoting the products adding the links to your website or inserting them into your blog posts. Each link will have a unique tracking number custom made for you, so when someone clicks on that link and buys a product you'll get a commission of that sale.

The nice thing about affiliate marketing is that there is no inventory and no calls to make. All you need is a website or blog. Once your blog or website starts getting a decent amount of traffic you might think of making this a business or means of income, rather than just a hobby.

The great benefit of affiliate marketing is that your not selling products of your own, so you have no products to store or shipping to do. You get to pick and choose the products that interest you.

Find the Network of your choice, the Merchant, then the Products

There are several, such as LinkShare, ShareASale, and Commission Junction these networks are used by many knowledgeable marketers.

Before you think about joining these networks, make sure you have a website, blog or both already loaded with content reason being, some of the merchants want a site or blog that has a lot of traffic or a site or blog that has relevant content. If you have none of these the Merchant may reject you. Some merchants like to take their time and visit your site or blog to see if it suits their needs. Some merchants don't even bother as long as you have a site or blog, they'll just accept your application.

Is this the right Merchant for you?

Take your time, do your research, make sure that the merchant is right for you. Whatever you do read the terms of service for each merchant you choose they may have restrictions on email campaigns or where you can place your links, such as social sites or classifieds every merchant is different. Once you've read the fine print and have your link you'll be ready to copy and paste it into your blog or on your site.

As soon as a customer clicks on one of your links it will take them to the merchants site, if they purchase something within the time period before it expires which is usually 30 days, then you'll receive a commission for it.

Well there you have it, some of the basics to get you started on affiliate marketing. The hardest part or I should say the most time consuming part is directing traffic to your website or blog. Be consistent in writing your posts and advertising your site, thats key to building your traffic. Once you've conquered this you'll be on your way to making good money.
